How to Lower your website's bounce rate | 5 ways
Bounce rate
is an e-marketing or web marketing term used in web traffic analysis to
represent the percentage of visitors who enter the page and leave (Bounce) the
site without continuing browsing the same site. Bounce rate is confused with
Exit rate. But they are quite different things. Bounce rate helps to measure
the effectiveness of a webpage. Google’s analytic specialist Avinash Kausik
says,” It’s really hard to get a bounce rate under 20%, anything more than 35%
is a cause for concern & anything more than 50% is a matter of stress. A
visitor may bounce or leave by several ways like clicking on a link to a page
on a different website, closing an open window or tab, typing a new URL,
clicking the “Back” button to leave the website or by session timeout. There
are some ways for the remedy of this problem but we will discuss only top and
most effective 5 ways to avoid or lessen the bounce rate problem.
Tip#1: Check Browser Performances:
Sometime while designing a website the developer
just exclusive works on a particular browser e.g. Firefox and forget to test
its performance on other browsers like IE, safari, chrome or Opera. And when
someone tries to access your website on those untested browsers then
unfortunately it takes longer time which frustrates the user. Your analytics tool can break
down bounce by browser type to see if this is the problem. So while designing
your website, you must get the testing done properly for less bounce rate.
Sometimes web pages with pictures take much time to load in case of some slower
connections. And people using those kinds of internet connections leave your
page in frustration & boredom.
Tip#2: Advertisement placements: Many web sites just can’t survive
without Ads as this is their source of wages. But the fact is most of the users
don’t like looking at ads, which is an unwanted fact for the content provider.
Advertisements that are close to the website navigation make users to click
them unintentionally which force the user to leave with frustration. Hence this
is a smart move to arrange or place the ads of your page at some proper place
so that the user will not get bored or frustrated. And it is also an important
issue to make the ads very interesting so that the client can’t take his eyes
off the advertisement. So an attractive ad with proper placement is an
important issue to be handled.
Tip#3: Don’t
confuse your message: Content or subject confusion is one of the biggest reasons of bounce
rate. Your web navigation should be clean and accessible. When a new visitor is
hunting down information about your website then your response to him/her
should be obvious and immediate. This will encourage your users to stay on your
page causing less bounce rate. Make the best use of graphics & animations
to highlight your headlines and important topics or features of your page. Make
your article more organized and user understandable. This will lessen bounce
rate of your page. Don’t distract your user with pops-up and all those stuffs.
Tip#4: Avoid
auto play audio, video & big blocks of text: When a user visits
your page he/she might be looking for some particular thing. In that stage when
one of your auto play audio or video gets played then the user gets frustrated
and just leaves your page. In some cases they are just unaware of the fact that
their speaker is on. In that case result is worse. Some sites contain huge
blocks of texts. This makes hard for users to go through all of contents. And
they just close the browser. Even if the text is very much useful for them,
they just don’t give a proper look at the content. So the tip is: place your
audio or video but not in the whole page, neither make them auto play. Secondly
make sure that your text is precise and broken into small sentences. That will
make the content readable to the user causing less bounce rate.
Tip#5: Write good contents with minimum external links: Visitors just don’t look only for good animated pages. Most users
search for a specific blog or article. They have their own class. This is why
good content matters for regular and new visitors. A good content never lets it
new user to leave the concern page & so as to a regular user. This fact can
make a huge change to your bounce rate. Giving external links is a good thinks
but it also has its own disadvantages. Only required and important links should
be given; as less as possible. This will help to lessen the bounce rate to a
great extent.
